Pool removal · cost guide
What does pool removal cost?
There is no honest flat price for taking out a pool. Two pools the same size can cost very different amounts depending on how much comes out, how a machine gets to the yard and what your city asks for. Here is what moves the number, so you know what you are paying for.
What moves the price
Six things
we look at.
We walk the site with you, look at each of these and give you a written quote. Estimates are free.
Partial or full removal
A partial removal breaks out the top of the shell, drills drainage holes in the floor and fills the rest. A full removal takes out the whole shell. Full removal costs more but leaves ground you can build on.
Size and depth
More concrete and rebar to break out, and more fill to bring in, as the pool gets bigger and deeper. A spa attached to the pool adds to both.
Access for machines
A wide side yard lets an excavator and skid steer drive straight in. Narrow gates, steps or no side access mean smaller machines, more hand work and more time.
Permit and inspections
Most cities want a permit before a pool comes out, with inspections along the way. Permit fees are set by the city and are usually billed separately.
Utilities
Gas, water and electrical lines to the pool and equipment are disconnected and capped before the shell is touched. Longer or harder-to-reach runs take more work.
Backfill and compaction
Clean fill is brought in and compacted in layers. If you plan to build where the pool was, your city may ask for an engineer's compaction plan, which adds cost.

- Is partial pool removal cheaper than full removal?
Usually, yes, because less concrete comes out. The trade-off is that the filled area is normally not suitable for building on later. If you might add a structure there, ask about full removal at the walk-through.
- Are permit fees included in the price?
Permit fees are set by your city, so we list them separately. We take care of the permit paperwork and meet the inspector on site.
- How long does a pool removal take?
Most residential pools take about one to two weeks of work on site, plus the time the city needs for inspections.
