Permits in San Francisco
What the city
asks for.
These points come from the Department of Building Inspection's information sheet on demolition permits (S-04).
From SF Department of Building Inspection
- Demolishing an entire building down to the foundation requires a demolition permit (Form 6).
- Demolishing part of a building does not need a demolition permit, but does need a building permit (Form 3/8).
- On residential projects, the site permit for a new building on the spot of an existing one is issued at the same time as the demolition permit.
- Larger buildings (other than wood-frame and those under three stories or 25 feet) need detailed demolition plans, such as the floor-by-floor sequence and protective canopy.
- The sheet cites the city's Construction and Demolition Debris Recovery Program (Ordinance 27-06).
How we help
- At the walk-through we tell you what paperwork your job is likely to need.
- We haul the debris on our own trucks, so one crew knows where every load went.
- We can usually start within 48 hours of your go-ahead. On permitted work the start date follows the permit.
Checked against DBI Information Sheet S-04 in October 2026. Rules and forms change, so confirm with the city before you plan around them.
